Kurtz is a good read — but stylistically she does get carried away at times. With likeness to a giant, paged newspaper article, this informative foottsteps combines her own first-hand anecdotes, numerous interviews, and meticulous research to illustrate how Mobutu sucked the Congo dry. The book has the fault of periodically being one-sided and lacking analysis of points of view other than her own.

Western complicity in propping up Mobutu should also never be forgotten.
